Created in SketchUp during the pandemic, this is my design for a card model 1/76th scale hexagonal Smock Windmill. It measures 210mm tall (excluding the sails and fantail). The diameter of the sails is 264mm (equivalent to 66ft).
Picture
Like kits produced by Metcalfe and Superquick, my model features printed brickwork and wooded paneling.  The internal formers, stiffeners and washers are mostly 1.2mm grey board. A single, vertical 4mm wooden dowel holds everything in place, and freely positions the cap to the base. Another length of dowel freely fixes the sails to the cap.

There are two popular types of sails on a windmill. “Spring Sails” employ a complex array of shutters, which are difficult to replicate. My design features the “Common Sail” - where canvas sheets are attached to a ladder framework. Both this framework and fantail are laser cut from 1mm board. The sails themselves  are cut from thin paper - less than 0.5mm thick. The balcony railings and supports are also laser cut from 1mm card.

Although expertly designed, I have no plans to market this as a kit. While I love being creative, selling and marketing were never my strengths. That said, I have forward my design to a few manufacturers, and time will tell.

If you would like to help me be more creative (and pay the bills), please buy my eBooks, or you can donate towards future projects (use the PayPal button below)! Your help is very much appreciated.

The Lost Diaries of John Smith is my enthralling science-fiction,  post-apocalyptic eBook, set in Scotland, and is available exclusively from Amazon Kindle.

War of the Worlds 1960 is my unauthorised sequel to H G Wells' classic The War of the Worlds, and is available as an eBook and softback edition from various outlets.

The film and television rights to these books are available.
